Ylioppilaskunnan Soittajat

Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra 2004

Ylioppilaskunnan Soittajat (Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra) was founded in 1926, but it carries on the traditions of the Academic Orchestra (founded in 1747) as its immediate successors. The YS auditions new members every September and, if necessary, during the semester. The orchestra rehearses on Wednesdays in the music room of the Vanha Ylioppilastalo. The YS is a full-sized symphony orchestra; it gives concerts, organizes balls and takes part in academic festivities.

Auditions for season 2011-2012 in September

  • Monday 12th 6 pm: wind instruments
  • Tuesday 13th 6 pm: string instruments

YS takes new members every year in annual auditions in September. The auditions are held in the office of YS at Vanha ylioppilastalo (2nd floor, stairs to the right from the main door), address: Vanha ylioppilastalo, Mannerheimintie 3, Helsinki.

A candidate can freely decide which two different kind of music tune to play. There is no prima vista test and it is not allowed to use an accompanist. The board of selection of new members wishes the tunes not to be very long.

There are many positive things that the board will consider when making decisions. It is a good thing if the candidate is willing to help with arrangements, the candidate can play well and is stydying in the Helsinki University.

The auditions are held at Vanha ylioppilastalo, address: Vanha ylioppilastalo, Mannerheimintie 3, Helsinki.
